Drive to the large car park adjacent to the beach at
West Wittering:
Follow the shore northwards and simply walk around the Sand Spit, East Head:
A large portion of the car park end of the spit was completely washed away in 1963 and has since been artificially re-established. As you walk along the foreshore you can often find an interesting range of shells, the ubiquitous oysters, American Slipper Limpet and the Razor shell as well as the Piddocks, Pholas and Ptericola which burrow into the soft rocks off shore. At the northern end of the spit there are very fine views of Chichester Harbour including Pilsey Island, Thorney and Emsworth channel. On the return journey south along the eastern, landward side of the spit you pass an area of salt marsh mainly consisting of the cord grass Spartina Townsendi with some Salicornia.
